A Study Trip to Amsterdam and Leiden (NL)

Based on the courses in American literature at the University of Wuppertal Dr. Bettina Hofmann organized a trip to Amsterdam and Leiden this year’s October. We were a group of sixteen students who started off to experience the Dutch capital. This excursion offered the chance to gain new impressions and get further information on the English, American and German history. Visiting Leiden and the American Pilgrim Museum brought us close to the Dutch past of the Puritans who sailed away to find their way to America in the 17th century. The Tropical Museum offered us the diversity and history of the whole world and its peoples, also including the triangular slave trade which forced so many African people to leave their home to get on ships to the New World.

Moreover, we were confronted with our own history: the persecution of the Jews by the Nazis and Anne Frank’s escape to Amsterdam.

Special thanks to our fellow students who gave short reports on the places and topics we were to experience during these four days. By their presentations, we were introduced to the issues we visited and could recall information we already heard about in the literature courses.

On the following pages, you can have a closer look on where we were exactly, whom we met and which impressions we took home.
We had a great time in the Netherlands and we hope that you’ll enjoy our online presentation of Amsterdam and Leiden!
